Alternate Personal Tumblelogs

topherchris:

Some of the stuff I want to say doesn’t belong on the main one.

I’ve noticed a growing trend of more and more users running a second tumblelog as an addendum to their main Tumblr account. The reasons I do mine (naw, I’m not going to link to it here) are essentially twofold: It gives me a place to respond to things that likely wouldn’t appeal to a majority of my regular readers, and it lets me feel a little more open with what I have to say (read: Be even more of an annoying jackass).

The biggest reason for this is that the number of followers and daily readers of my alterlog is but a tiny fraction of my primary home. Another is that I figure if somebody’s going to the trouble to basically follow me twice then I hope they won’t mind a just a little less editorial discretion there.

Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing really edgy going on. It’s definitely not a secret tumblr — anyone who wants to find it likely can.

I’m curious if the motivations are similar for the rest of you with dueling tumblrs.

My motivations for this alternablog are exactly the same as yours. The more people that end up following my main Tumblr—not to suggest I have many, because I don’t—the more I feel the need to try and post with some semblance of quality control. Before I knew that anyone was reading my blog, I felt free to do or say anything I wanted, no matter how inane. Now that I literally have a list of people that are likely to see what I put on my site, I feel obligated to behave.

It’s like being around just your closest friends and not caring about burping out loud or scratching your ass. Then, some new people show up and you sit up straight, wipe off your face and clench up your buttcheeks instead of ripping that hilarious fart.

The secondary Tumblr is simply a place where I can retreat with just those good friends and toss my manners aside, make random, asinine jokes and post pictures of girls in bikinis without fear of any backlash.

As much as I appreciate all the people who enjoy my regular Tumblr enough to follow it, sometimes I just feel like kicking my feet up and being a little bit more crass and unfiltered.
